Class - Fixing Mistakes for Knitting Newbies

Learn to read your knitting better, understand stitch mount, frogging (ripping out multiple rows), tinking (unknitting – T-I-N-K is knit spelled backwards), picking up dropped stitches, and how to get things back onto your knitting needles. You'll learn some basic skills that will help you recover from an knitting boo-boo.

Note: This is not a repair class. We will be learning to fix mistakes made in an active knitting project.

Skills Required:

This is not a "Leran to Knit" class. Participants should be able to do the pre-class homework confidently without assistance. It may be helpful if you know how to purl but if you are a very new knitter and haven’t learned how to purl yet this class should still be ok for you.

This class will require focus! Don’t skip breakfast/lunch. We’ll be exercising your brain and challenging your hand-eye coordination as you learn to manipulate your yarn, needles, and maybe some other tools in new ways. Feel free to bring a covered drink and/or snack.

What to bring:

  •  Come to class with the pre-class homework done but still on your needles to continue in class.
  •  Crochet hook(s) if you have them. (Same size or smaller than your needle)
  •  A circular knitting needle (or two double pointed needles) size US 5 or US 4 – to be used as a helping tool. We want this needle to be 3 or 4 sizes smaller than the needle you are knitting with. Bring what you have. Don't buy one just for this class. Stephanie with have a smattering of different size needles you can use in class.
  •  Locking stitch markers (like Clover 353 Locking Stitch Markers or similar)
  •  Note taking materials

Pre-Class Homework(REQUIRED) - Making a Garter Stitch Swatch

The pre-class homework must be completed and brought to class. It’s not much, you can probably complete it the evening before class.

Yarn: Worsted weight yarn with excellent stitch definition. Malabrigo Rios is the best yarn for this class. Avoid dark colors, heathered or tweedy yarns, fluffy, hairy, thick-and-thin. Solid colors are ok but variegated yarns with coloring similar to Malabrigo Rios are best at clearly differentiating between neighboring stitches and rows which is critical for this class. A worsted-spun multi-ply yarn with 4 or more plies will be best. Some single-ply yarns might be ok, but many will be problematic. Same for 2-ply yarns – Some might be ok, but many can hinder stitch definition. You don’t need much yarn. Use scraps from a previous project or something from your stash. If you need to buy yarn, you’ll get 10% off yarn purchased for this class.

Needle Size: US 8 (or what your yarn recommends). If you know you have a tight or loose gauge you may adjust your needle size accordingly (if you know, you know).

Needle Type: Circular (approximately 24”). We’ll be slipping and moving stitches around and having circular needles will be helpful in class.

Instructions

  •        Cast on 20 stitches using your preferred cast on.
  •        Knit 30-40 rows (or approximately 3”-4” from your cast on).
  •        Do not bind off. Come to class with your stitches still on the needles, ready to continue in class.
