Class - Intro to Double Knitting

Are you curious about double knitting? This is the class for you.

Double knitting is a technique that create two layers of fabric simultaneously using 2 colors or yarn. Images produced on one side are usually mirrored on the reverse but not always. It is possible to to have non-mirrored images too.

Delve into Double knitting with Stephanie. You’ll build new skills at each class meeting with a series of exercises and small projects designed to explore double knitting techniques. By the end of class, you’ll be able to confidently cast on for the double knitting project of your choice.

Skills required: Knitters must already know how to knit, purl, cast on, bind off. Experience reading patterns is recommended.

Class meets on Sun mornings 10am-12:30pm Feb - March
This class meets 3 times. Reserve March 22 for winter weather make up if needed.

Yarn: The class exercises and small class projects are designed for worsted weight yarn. You’ll need 2 colors. 100g of each color will be sufficient - you’ll only need about 20g each color for the Pre-Class Homework and the class exercise on the first day. We’ll be casting on a new project together after the first class, so you can pick out yarn for that project after our first class. You can continue using the worsted weight from the first class exercise or, if you will be starting a double knitting project of your choice over class refer to yarn and yardage requirements in your pattern. See the Pre-Class Homework PDF for more information about yarn and needles.

Target Agenda:

Day 1

Come to class with your Pre-Class Homework (see attached PDF). Do not cut your yarn of bind off your pre-class homework. We will continue working with your baby watches in class together. Class exercises will focus on exploring how 2 layers of fabric work on one needle and how to join the layers on each end. Our goal (if time allows) will be to start practicing with both strands (colors) of our yarn at the same time. We’ll review project and yarn choices for Day 2 .

Homework – Keep practicing on your swatch. Decide on your project and yarn for Day 2. Come to class on Day 2 with your original swatch (hopefully showing progress and practice you did over the week), plus the yarn and needles you will need for casting on the next project. If you are planning to make something other than Stephanie’s Checkered Mug Rug, then be sure to have your pattern printed and ready to follow.

Day 2

Adress any questions or issues encountered. Cast on together for a small double knitting project (using worsted weight yarn (or thicker). Some project choices:

  •        Checkered Squares Mug Rug (Recommended)

o   Instructions included in class.

  •        Folksy Hot Pads by Shelli Can

o   Pattern purchased separately.

  •        Alphabet Coasters/Potholders by Lisa Hannan Fox

o   Pattern purchased separately. You can choose to get a pattern for a single letter or a pattern for the whole alphabet.

  •        Counting Sheep Coaster by Lisa Hannan Fox

o   Pattern purchased separately.

o   https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/counting-sheep-coaster

  •        Any other “mirrored” double knitting project using worsted weight or thicker yarn and has less than 40 sts to cast on.

Homework – Keep working on your project. Aim to finish the mug rug so you can learn to bind off and weave in your ends. Think about what project you’d like to cast on next. If you made Stephanie’s Checkered Squares Mug Rug, any of the other suggestions above will be fantastic next projects as they all step up complexity from simple squares and rectangles. If you plan to cast on for a new adventure in Day 3, be sure to bring your printed pattern and yarn selections with you.

Day 3

If you’ve finished your mug rug, you’ll bind off in class and learn to weave in your ends.

If you are casting on a new project, you can consider any pattern your feel drawn too, from mirrored, non-mirrored, and finer weight yarns.
