Class - Cables and Lace (Tendrilly)

Advance your lace skills with the Tendrilly shawl by Dee O'Keefe.

See a trio of swatches that Stephanie has started on Ravelry here. (You must be logged into Ravelry to view project pages.)

Challenge your knitting with an engaging combination of cables and lace in the Tendrilly Shawl by Dee O’Keefe. Tendrilly is a triangular shawl that is worked flat, starts at one point, and grows with increases along one side. The construction makes it possible to easily customize the size of your project. Stop early to make a kerchief, or a shawlette. Keep going and make an extra-large and snuggly shawl. Work at your own pace in class and at home between classes. We have plenty of class meetings for you to progress at your leisure with Stephanie on hand to guide you.

Dee O’Keefe’s patterns are always well written. You’ll find written and charted instructions in the Tendrilly pattern. Not fond of charts yet? Stephanie will include tips and tricks to help you better understand what you see on your needles and connect it to what the chart is telling you. Still want to stick with written instructions? You certainly can.

Come to the first class with your yarn wound and ready to cast on.

Skills required: Participants must be able to confidently cast on, knit, purl, decrease, and bind off without assistance. Experience reading patterns is required (written or charted). Prior experience knitting lace will be helpful, but an adventurous and determined first time lace knitter is also welcome in class.

Project: Tendrilly by Dee O’Keefe

Pattern: Not included in class and must be purchased separately. Get the pattern from any of these sources:

  •        Designer’s Website: https://deeokeefedesigns.com/b/JFnCi (print at home)
  •        Ravelry: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/tendrilly (print at home)
  •        Cloverhill Yarn Shop In-Store Ravelry Purchase – Choose this option if you do not have a printer (Cloverhill will be able to print the pattern for you). Ravelry will also send the pattern to the email address you provide us with at checkout, and it will also appear in your Ravelry library (if you have a Ravelry account). We will not print patterns that you purchase independently from Ravelry or the designer’s website. We are only able to print Ravelry In-Store purchases.

Materials Required:

Yarn: The pattern is written for a DK weight yarn but will work well with many weights of yarn from Worsted weight to Fingering weight. The designer’s version was made using Hazel Knits Lively DK a 90% Merino, 10% Nylon, plied yarn with 275 yds / 130g per skein (equivalent to 211yds / 100g).

Sizes:

Medium 60” x 26” (Large 73” x 31”)

Pattern Gauge:

4.5 sts = 1” in stockinette on US 7 or size need to obtain gauge. Gauge is not critical for this project. If you use thicker yarn, you will probably need more yardage. If using thinner yarn, you will probably use less yardage.

Yardage:

550 yds (800 yds) at pattern gauge - Remember your gauge will impact the amount of yarn required.

Shop for yarn in your stash or get 10% off regularly priced yarn purchased for your project.

Yarns available in the shop that you might consider: (includes Worsted, DK, and Sport weight options)

  •        Elsebeth Lavold Silky Wool
  •        Berroco Ultra Wool DK, Vintage, or Vintage Baby
  •        Malabrigo Rios, Seis Cabos, Arroyo
  •        Plymouth Yakima
  •        Tempting Ewe Yarns Ewe So Perfect DK, or Sparkle DK
  •        Ella Rae Eco Tweed Sport

Needles:

US 7 (4.5mm) circulars for body of shawl and US 6 (4.0mm) for ribbing. To accommodate the final size of the shawl, a 32” length circular is recommended.  Adjust needle sizes to achieve gauge or to get a fabric you like with your selected yarn. If you are using thicker yarn, you may increase your needle sizes. If you are using thinner yarn, you may decrease your needle sizes.

Other notions:

  •        Stitch markers - at least 4 to divide pattern repeats, plus one more that is a different color/shape/style than the others.
  •        A few locking stitch markers to help catch any dropped stitches, aid in counting, and mark the right side of your work.
  •        Cable needle (or other tool you like to work cables – like a spare double pointed needle.
  •        Note taking materials.
  •        Optional: a pattern holder, marking tools, and/or equipment you like to use. Stephanie likes to use magnetic pattern holders for lace projects (e.g. KnitPro’s Knitting Chart Keeper or other similar product).

Target Agenda:

On the first day we will cast on together and get as far as possible on Chart 1. You will continue at your own pace at home. In following classes Stephanie will help with any issues you encounter and provide tips and tricks to help you. The last day of class will include a blocking demonstration.
