Private Lesson - Stephanie in 2024

Stephanie offers private lessons on a wide range of topics and skills in the fiber arts from Knitting, Crochet, Spinning, and Weaving.  If she knows how to do it, then she can teach you how to do it too!

Most lesson topics can be covered in a one hour session, but there are many topics that need additional time.  We highly recommend that you speak with one of our staff to determine the best length of time for your lesson.  You should also confirm if there are any specific materials, or pre-class homework required for your lesson.

Knitting

Topics from novice, to beginner, to advanced can be tackled in private lessons with Stephanie.  Most topics can be covered in just 1 hour.  Some topics require more time (for instance turning a sock heel takes 2-2.5 hours).  Some topics require some pre-lesson homework or other preparations before meeting with Stephanie to make the best use of your time with Stephanie.

Crochet

Topics from novice, to beginner, to advanced can be tackled in private lessons with with Stephanie.  Most topics can be covered in just 1 hour.  Some topics require more time.  Some topics require some pre-lesson homework or other preparations before meeting with stephanie.

Handspinning

Topics with spindles or spinning wheels can be tackled in private lessons with Stephanie.  Beginning spinning lessons (on a drop spindle) should be booked for a 2 hour duration unless you have already had a conversation with Stephanie about your goals.  If you don't need the full 2 hours for your lesson we will refund or prorate unused time, but in most cases 1 hour is not enough time.  2 hours is almost always the perfect amount of time.  We love questions! Ask before you book your lesson time if you need help to refine your lesson needs and time requirements.

For begining spinning we recommend the Ashford Studen Drop Spindle and 1 oz. of Mixed BFL available for purchase at the shop.

Handweaving

Topics with rigid heddle looms, small table looms, or other portable looms can be tackled in private lessons with Stephanie.  Any rigid heddle weaving lesson that will include warping a loom as part of the lesson will usually require 2 hours minimum.  Some skills and weaving techniques can be tackled in just a 1 hour session if you have your loom warped and prepared for your lesson.  We love questions! Ask before you book your lesson time if you need help to refine your lesson needs and time requirements.

Beginning Rigid Heddle Weaving:  Get Your Loom Warped and Begin Weaving (3hrs)
First time weaving with a rigid heddle loom, or a re-boot/review lesson require 3 hours. Book any 3 consecutive lessons on the same day.  Participant is expected to own a rigid heddle loom already.  Loom must be assembled and in good working order.  Bring all loom parts and accessories you own just incase we need them.  You'll learn how to set up your loom and get started weaving.  The idea is that you'll leave with a loom warped and ready for you to weave on at home.   Please recognize that private lessons will move at your pace.  Time required and topics covered are estimates.  Some people will move faster and some people will move slower.  The recomended project is designed to produce something a usable size, but designed to be something that can be done in the time you have with your instructor.  Changing the size of the project and/or the thickness of the yarn used, and/or the epi of the reed will significantly impact the time required to get the loom set up.

A beginning rigid heddle lesson will generally cover:
  • Direct warping your loom for a scarf sized project.  (recomended 7"-9" wide warp and about 96" long)
    • Measuring the warp.
    • Beaming the warp for success.
    • Threading the eyes.
    • Tieing on.
  • Preparing to weave.
    • Spreading your warp.
    • Adjusting tension.
    • Weaving a header.
  • Begining to weave as time allows. (focus on making balanced plain-weave)
  • Hemstitching if time allows.
  • Basic ceaving calculations if time allows (quick back of the envelope style)

Materials and equipment for a beginning rigid heddle weaving lesson:
  • A rigid heddle loom at least 8" wide.  Loom must be assembled and in good working order.  Bring all bits and bobs that came with your loom including clamps, shuttles, hooks, and clamps.
  • One Reed (Heddle) with 7.5-dents, 8-dents, or 10-dents per inch (7.5 epi, 8 epi, or 10 epi)
  • Approximatly 200 grams of worsted weight yarn appropriate for weaving a scarf.  (Malabrigo Rios is a perfect choice.)
  • A snack, a drink, and comfortable shoes. (3 hrs is a long time and you will be standing, walking, and bending over for most of it.)
  • Please do not skip meals before your weaving lesson.  Eat a breakfast or lunch that will sustain you.  (Again your lesson will be active.  YOu will be standing and walking for most of your lesson with very little sitting.  Plus your brain will be active learning new things, and your brain needs calories to work.)
