Class - Embroidery Basics on Knit/Crochet

Learn how to embellish any knitted, crocheted, or woven fabric.  For the purpose of this class, you do not need to know how to knit, crochet, or weave.  You can learn embroidery on any fabric whether you created it, thrifted it, or purchased a cotton tshirt.

You just need a little extra yarn or embroidery thread and a tapestry needle and you’ll be ready to give this a try!

Techniques Learned:

  • Duplicate Stitch and or Surface Crochet
  • Chain Stitch, Running Stitch, Outline Stitch
  • Satin stitch
  • French Knots

Materials when learning on a knit, crochet, or woven item:

  • a tapestry needle
  • a crochet hook if learning surface crochet
  • a fluffy yarn for the wool (preferably one that is fuzzy and blooms, such as single ply merino)
  • a plied yarn for the face, ears, and legs (such as, plied superwash merino or plied acrylic)
  • a plied yarn for the eyes (plied superwash is your friend)
  • the item you are embroidering
  • a swatch of knit stockinette stitch or crochet or woven fabric to practice techniques.
For this particular embroidery, use yarn that is the same weight or slightly heavier than the yarn used for your project.

Materials when learning on a cotton woven, twill, or denim or other fabric:

  • an embroidery needle in the appropriate size for your embroidery floss (usually a 7 or 9)
  • cotton floss embroidery thread
  • an embroidery hoop
  • the item you are embroidering
  • a scrap of fabric to practice techniques
