Class - Portuguese Knitting

Portuguese knitting pin included in class price. Pin distributed in class.

Learning to knit in different ways is a great way to build your skills and knowledge.  You might also find a better and more ergonomic way to do things.  Portuguese knitting can go by other names, but the distinguishing feature is either yarn draped around the neck, or looped on a special pin or necklace.  You find this style of knitting is prevalent in many Middle Eastern and South American knitting communities.

Students must already know how to knit.  You must know how to cast on, knit, and purl on your own unassisted.  You should be able to identify knit and purl stitches in your knitting.  And, you need to be able to complete the pre-class homework below.

Stephanie welcomes all types of knitters and knitting styles in class.  English style, continental style, combination knitters.  Right handed and left handed knitter friendly!  Stephanie can adapt to your knitting style and can knit leftie, backwards, or mirrored if needed.

Requirements:  Participants must already know how to knit.  This is not a "learn to knit" class.  Participants must know how to cast on, knit, and purl unassisted.  You should be able to identify knit and purl stitches in your knitting.  You must to be able to complete the pre-class homework below unassisted.

Bring to Class:

  • come to class with your Pre-Class Homework on the needles and ready to continue knitting in class.
  • note taking materials

Class style: This is an in person class.  Enrollment is limited to 6 people.

Please review our group class policies here before registering.

Pre-Class Homework

Yarn:

Use a medium or worsted weight yarn with good stitch definition.  Avoid dark colors, fuzzy, hairy, textured, or thick-n-thin yarns.  Malabrigo Rios would be an excellent choice.  You'll be happiest if your yarn has some stretch and squish to it.  Avoid yarns that don't have stretch (aka cottons, linen, hemp, alpaca, and many acrylics).

Needles:

Use whatever size needles you would normally use with your yarn.  Gauge is not critical for this project.  You may use straight needles or circular needles at your discretion.

Pre-Class Homework Instructions:

Cast on 36 stitches using your preferred cast on method.

Knit 8 rows.  Use whatever your default knitting style is.

Do not bind off.  Come to class with your knitting still on the needles and ready to be continued in class.
