Class - Brioche Intro (1-Color Flat)
2.5hr one-time meeting. Start a swatch, grow it to a scarf if you choose.
Instructor: Stephanie
This class is designed for those who want to dip their toes into brioche and give it a try as well as those who have tried brioche and want a refresher. Come to class with your swatch already started and ready to go. SEE PRE-CLASS HOMEWORK BELOW FOR INSTRUCTIONS.
If you need yarn wound before class, please consider dropping by the shop a few days in advance and we can have it wound for you to do your Pre-Class Homework.
Skills required: Students are expected to be able to knit and purl confidently and consistently without assistance. You must be able to complete the pre-class homework.
You may use any suitable yarn and needles for class. You do not need to purchase materials from Cloverhill Yarn Shop but, we will give you 10% Off yarn purchased for this class. Class yarn discount applicable to in-store purchase only. Discount not available for website purchase.
MATERIALS AND TOOLS:
- YARN: Worsted weight yarn that produces good stitch definition. Light to medium colors preferred. Avoid dark colors, fuzzy yarns, textured yarns and thick-n-thin yarns. Malabrigo Rios is Stephanie's number 1 suggestion for this class/project.
- If you plan on growing your swatch into a scarf after class you will need 200g-300g of worsted weight yarn depending on how long you choose to make your scarf.
- If you are just making a swatch in class, then 40g-50g should be sufficient.
- NEEDLES: Use needles about 2 sizes smaller than what you would use to knit stockinette with that yarn. If in doubt, US 6 is a good size for brioche if you normally use US 8 needles with worsted weight yarn. If you knit tight, you can go up a size from there. If you knit loose, go down a size (or two). You may use straight needles or circular needles long enough to accommodate an 8” wide scarf.
- At least 2 stitch markers that can be distinguished from each other. It is also useful to have a few locking ring stitch markers on hand as well.
- Other handy things: (bring any and all that you have on the list below.)
- A crochet hook or two. Size does not need to be exact, but it is best if the hook size is not larger than the knitting needles you are using. Several sizes smaller than your needles is ok, just not bigger.
- A pair of Double Pointed Needles. Size does not need to be exact, but it is best if the size is smaller than the knitting needles you are using. Many sizes smaller than your needles is ok. DPNs the same size as your needles is fine if that is what you already have.
- A circular knitting needle many sizes smaller than the needles you are using.
- Stitch markers, locking ring type or safety pin type. More than one color if possible.
PRE-CLASS HOMEWORK:
- Cast on 36 stitches using your preferred cast on method. Cast on loosely. If you tend to cast on tightly consider using a larger needle to cast on or try using a simple cast on. Remember to leave yourself a tail long enough to weave in later.
- Knit 8 rows.
- Do not cut yarn. Don not bind off. Come to class with your homework on the needles.
