Class - Papillon Bootcamp

Join Stephanie for an intensive bootcamp for the Papillon Shawl (aka Butterfly/Papillon Shawl). Class will meet once and you’ll leave with your shawl underway to continue happily on your own. Class will cover color selections, short row options, increase options, and the all important, how to read the pattern instructions.

If you are shopping for yarns this shawl is fantastic when one of the yarns is color-changing. Urth Yarns Uneek Fingering Urth Yarns Uneek Sock, Gusto Yarn Echoes, Scheepjees Whirl, Universal Yarn Bamboo Pop Sock, Wonderland Yarns Blossoms, KFI Painted Sock, and Schoppel-Wolle Zauberball Crazy are fantastic choices in the shop. You might also consider using stash leftovers, mini skeins, gradient sets, or other “solid” yarns to showoff the shawl construction.

Check out all the lovely completed projects on Ravelry!—papillon

Pattern Information:
Gauge: 22 sts & 46 rows = 4″ in garter stitch.
Gauge is not critical for a shawl, but will affect yardage requirements.

Needles: US 4 (3.5 mm) or other as needed to achieve gauge. You’ll need a 40″ length by the time you get to the end of the shawl, but you DO NOT need all that cord in the beginning! Start on a 24″ or 32″ (or thereabouts) and you’ll get pretty far without the annoyance of “too-much-cord” as you knit.

Yarn amounts for 2 colors/yarns:

  • MAIN COLOR: 2 x URTH, Uneek Fingering 100g. /398m-435yds ((TOTAL of 796 m / 870 yds & 200 g))
  • CONTRAST COLOR: 1 x URTH, Uneek Harvest Fingering, 100g / 398m-435yds

Yarn amounts for 6 colors/yarns: (approximate)

  • 5 -MAIN COLORs: 5 x generic fingering yarn roughly 50g. /180m-200yds ((TOTAL of 900m / 1,000yds & 250 g))
  • 1-CONTRAST COLOR: 2 x generic fingering yarn roughly 50g. /180m-200yds ((TOTAL of 360m / 400yds & 100 g))

Class Agenda:

  • Review color selections to make the construction pop
  • Review and demonstrate increases like Make One, M1L & M1R, and other increase options.
  • Review and demonstrate short row methods including Wrap and Turn (as called for in the pattern), German Short Rows (super easy to substitute in the pattern), and others.
  • Discuss how to utilize different short rows in the pattern.
  • Learn how to navigate and read the pattern instructions.

Bring to Class:

  • See Over-Achiever’s Pre-Class Homework below. The pre-class homework is OPTIONAL, but highly recommended.  DO NOT BIND OFF - Bring your homework to class ready to continue knitting.
  • Come to class with at least 2 colors of yarn wound and ready to use. If you’ve already picked yarn for your shawl, bring it wound and ready. If you haven’t decided on yarn yet, come with 2 contrasting colors of yarn to practice with in class.  Worsted, DK, and sport weight yarns are all great for practicing in class.
  • Make sure you bring a needle of size and length appropriate for the yarn you’ll use in class.
  • Bring the pattern printed in color. This is NOT the time to follow a pattern from you smart phone, tablet, or computer!! You must own a copy of the pattern. The pattern is NOT included in the class. The pattern is available for purchase at the shop as a Ravelry In-Store Purchase. If you purchase the pattern from us through Ravelry we will print it out for you as well as make sure it gets sent to your Ravelry library. If you purchase the pattern independently on Ravelry you must print it yourself.
  • Stitch markers!!! You should bring 4 that will be used to mark increase locations, these can be closed type markers. At least one of the increase markers should be uniquely identifiable. Bring a bountiful handful of locking or safety-pin type stitch markers to help with short rows.
  • Pen/pencil, highlighter(s) and note paper might be helpful.
  • Highlighter tape, post its, chart keeper, and/or row counters are optional and might be helpful.
