We got lots of new yarns in the shop today.  Lots of pretty stuff for fall knitting.  Fun new sock yarns, some huge chunky variegated yarns that would make an excellent scarf.  And I know that some of you have been anxiously awaiting the arrival of the Zauberball - they’re here!!!

Two FO’s…

Saturday, August 22nd, 2009

I had missed the sense of accomplishment that comes with finishing a knitting project no matter how big or small.  I’m excited to show you not just one finished object but two!  Well same yarn and both hats but distinctly different projects.  I’ve used another skein of Three Irish Girls that I purchased at our booth at Sheep & Wool those many months ago.  It’s Wexford Merino Silk in the Florry colorway.  The 240 yards gave me more than enough for the first hat so I followed it up with another hat.

The first is a lovely slouchy beret I’ve made for a friend as a thank you gift (no she does not read this blog so the surprise is still safe).  The pattern is the Grace Lace Beret, a free pattern if you click on the link.  My friend happens to be one of those people who looks amazing in hats and this one suits her perfectly.  Take a look!

The second hat was a quick knit 1×1 rib newborn hat.  What else would you with leftover yarn when you’re six months pregnant?!  I made is extra long so at first I’ll fold it up but as the baby grows I’ll make the fold smaller and the ribbing will expand.  I think it’s cute and it should be nice and warm this winter.

I love finishing projects!

There’s Still Time! There’s Still Room!

Hey All, these great classes still have spaces available!  There are a bunch of new samples and yarns in the shop with these classes in mind so stop in and check them out to get inspired for the fast-approaching autumn season!

Two sweaters  from the new Norah Gaughan collection (vol. 5 for those keeping track) have inspired classes, a vest, Hypatia, knit in the lovely Ultra Alpaca is a fun to kniw combination of texture and cables and just the sort of garment to transition you into fall; and an intriguing sweater, Anhinga, with unique construction and gorgeous drape.

Three sock classes are on offer, one to get you started with a basic technique -cuff down, double pointed needles, a second to teach an alternate method -toe-up, magic loop (which means using one, long, circular needle rather than double points or two circulars), and one in which you will learn to fine tune the fit and shape of your socks, allowing you to create the PERFECT SOCKS FOR YOU and breaking the bonds of patterns once and for all!

Three classes seek to teach new techniques: Entrelac Scarf is knit with a clever technique that allows you to achieve a woven look with no sewing!  Your teacher will not only teach you the construction but to knit and purl BACKWARDS!  A Fair Isle Hat will allow you to experiment with two-color stranded knitting on a small scale with a stylish beret as the result.  The Lace Shawl class offeres three levels of difficulty, allowing the opportunity for students to learn basic lace stitches and then expand their knowledge with great support from the teacher.

And finally, the class everyone needs but who hardly anyone really wants to take, Sweater Finishing!  It doesn’t sound exciting but the truth is, a beautifully knit sweater won’t look good on unless it’s been finished with care and knowledge.  In this class Jolene will teach her students to sew seams like a pro.

We hope to see you very soon to look at new samples and new patterns and then to sign up for one of these great classes!

Exciting Men’s Patterns!

Last week in our fall shipment from Berroco, in addition to the Blackstone Tweed, we also received a new Norah Gaughan collection of men’s patterns!  The general consensus amongst us was that this was one of the first men’s pattern collections with patterns we would knit for the men we are or know.  This booklet features seven amazing pullovers, one zippered cardigan, three hats, and four scarves!  While there are 15 total patterns there is a variety of explorations into cable work, textural stitches, and even simple color work.  These patterns meet the male definition of masculine while still providing the knitter and wearer a piece of interest and complexity.  Stop by soon to pick up your booklet!

New Yarn In!

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

If you’ve been in the shop in the last few days you may have noticed the bright neon signs pointing to our newest yarn.  Berrocco’s Blackstone Tweed has made it in time for your fall knitting.  While it is still early August it is definitely not too early to be planning your fall knitting.  Berrocco describes Blackstone Tweed as “…for the discerning knitter! This super soft yarn has all the rustic appeal of a classic tweed yarn but with a high dose of mohair and angora. With wear these garments will develop a soft and fuzzy halo. A joy to wear and a pleasure to knit.”  We not only received five gorgeous shades of Blackstone Tweed but also the coordinating pattern booklet.  This booklet has eight interesting fall/winter patterns.

Galway!

August’s Yarn of the Month is Plymouth’s Galway!

As always you save 10% on any purchase of Galway and we donate a portion of the proceeds will go to Colleen’s favorite charity, Homeward Trails Animal Shelter.  We’re thrilled to once again help another great charity.

Each 210 yard ball of Galway is 100% Pure Wool and we consider it  to be a staple in every knitter’s arsenal.  This classic yarn is perfectly suited for anything you could ever want to knit.  Sweaters, blankets, hats, mittens, scarves, even socks would be deliciously warm out of Galway.

To get you going for fall, we’re featuring an amazing pattern designed with Galway in mind.  Kate Jackson’s November Ruffle Wrap is described as “This easy-to-wear wrap is a quick knit…Pick up and knit a ribbed ruffle on three sides of a stockinette rectangle, then wear dramatically.”  That sounds like a quick fall knit to us!
