Happy new year from us here at Cloverhill! We hope you all had excellent and merry celebrations, and that you’ve finished your Christmas projects and are ready to knit something for yourself.

One of our favorite local dyers stopped by today to replenish our stock of Wullenstudio Sock. Since I (Rebecca) compulsively arrange yarn into rainbows, it is coordinated and ready for your picking pleasure.

Sheila dyes her yarns by hand, and most of the 75% superwash merino/25% nylon skeins in our possession are semi-solids. They are perfect for a lace scarf, or a pair of socks in a fancy pattern that would get lost in a sock yarn of more varied hue. It’s incredibly soft to work with, though you might not be able to tell, what with how tightly the 450 yards are twisted down into a compact little skein.

See that dark green in the lower left corner? That’s a new color, called “Bungle in the Jungle.” It’s a dark sort of foresty green with lighter, yellowish flecks. You should come and buy it before I do. See you soon!

Looking to learn something new?

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

We’ve got some great classes coming up just in time to learn something new for all those long winter nights ahead.

Have you ever wondered how to do fair isle, knitting with two c0lors at a time?  This technique allows you to create interesting color patterns and will get your fingers accustomed to holding two yarns at a time.  Join Elements of Fair Isle on Saturday December 12 with Coleen and create a beautiful Fair Isle tam.

Back by popular demand is Bonita’s Einstein Jacket class.  This time around it’s being structured as a guided knit-a-long.  The first class will be instructional and then the following classes will meet as you need them.  Bonita will be at all classes to offer support as you complete your Jacket.  The classes are spread out so you can get your knitting done and ready for the next steps.

A personal favorite is Heron.  This gorgeous cardigan is knit as fast as a cardigan could go using Berocco Peruvia Quick.   We have tried it on several body types and it looks great from thin, average and expecting women!  This sweater will be perfect to keep you nice and warm during your winter.

This is just a small sample of classes to wet your appetite!  Check out the class page on our website and stop by or call to sign up for the class of your choice.  We’re sure you’ll find something that interests you!

All Cashmere on Sale during November!

Saturday, November 7th, 2009

A new month means a new yarn of the month, and November we have a special treat for you.

Yarn of the Month - Cashmere

Yes, you read that right. All cashmere currently in stock in the store is 10% off. What makes Cashmere yarn so special, you may ask? Cashmere yarn comes from the down of the Cashmere goat, and is one of the finest, softest fibers available. Finer even than merino, silk, and alpaca, cashmere is the softest yarn we have in the store.

Here is a preview of some of the different cashmere yarns you can choose from:

Kellie's Cashmere Cable Hat

Kellie's Cashmere Cable Hat

1. Plymouth Yarns Royal Cashmere is a worsted weight, 100% cashmere yarn. It comes in various pastel and earth tones, with a lofty cable ply that disguises it as a regular yarn while the wearer feels its secret softness. One of our samples, Kellie’s Cashmere Cable Hat (say that five times fast), is made with just one skein of this little luxury.

Karabella yarns Supercashmere Fine

Karabella yarns Supercashmere Fine

2. Karabella yarns’ Supercashmere Fine is a fingering yarn that comes in precious little balls with generous yardage. We have three colors in stock - white, fuscia, and purple (not shown). Only two of these would make an ample lacy scarf.

*

100_289913. Jade Sapphire has two yarns that we have included in our Yarn of the Month Sale - Mongolian Cashmere, which is 100% cashmere, and Silk Cashmere, 55% Silk & 45%. Both are fingering weight 2-ply, and each 55g skein boasts 400 yards. One would make a lacy scarf, two a wonderful shawl, and four or so would be an excellent choice for the featherweight cardigan we have on display in the shop.

100_29024. If you’re looking for a brighter worsted, look no farther than the few precious skeins of 100% cashmere dyed specially for the shop by Erin of C*eye*ber Fiber. Red and rose are the two semi solids we have left in her 300 yard skeins.

*

100_29055. If natural hues are your preference, check out our second entry from Plymouth Yarns: Ecco Cashmere. One of our staff used one skein to make the very popular Flutter Scarf on ravelry. This yarn is a laceweight, its 354 yards weighing in at 50g.

100_29076. Last, but certainly not least, is Jojoland’s Consonance. We have this 50% Cashmere, 50% silk in a rich salmon color. Check out our selection and treat yourself during Turkey month!

New Class List Is Up!

Saturday, October 10th, 2009

By now you’ve probably received Jolene’s email or seen the Ravelry post or even just discovered it yourself on the website but just in case you haven’t - the new class list is up!  We’re so excited about the variety of classes being offered over the next few months.  I don’t want to list them all here but rather share with you a few that are particularly interesting.  The Mondo Cable Cardi by Bonnie Marie Burns allows you to choose the length of sleeves that are best for your body.  The series of three Fingerless Gloves classes allows you to do all three as a beginner or any combination of the three based on your skill level.  As always promised we continue to offer beginner knitting, spinning, and sock classes.  These are so popular we couldn’t do a session without them!  Lastly, brought back by popular demand is our Block of the Month class.  Learn new knitting techniques on each block and take the Block of the Month Finishing class to seam them all up into a gorgeous afghan.

As mentioned earlier these are just a few of the exciting classes we’re going to be offering.  Stop by to sign up soon!

July Happenings

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

Hello. I hope you are all enjoying the summer and the fun knits that come along with that! Are you headed to the Catonsville 4th of July parade? I see the chairs all lined up along the street on my travels around town. Getting ready!!! Due to the events in town we will be closed on July 4th. I hope you enjoy the holiday!

So July came faster than I could imagine. For the July Yarn of the Month we have a new Independent Artist’s work to join our shop. Miryam from Rock Creek Yarn has brought some of her best work to the shop. She has supplied 10 different colors of her sock yarn to the shop. To promote her offerings I have designed a summer sock pattern for you. The sock is a cuff down pattern with a zig zag pattern on the leg and a star toe construction. Maybe something new for you? The pattern is Free with yarn purchase for the month of July and will be for sale after July.

As you know we like to donate what we can to charity each month. Usually this means an employee picks their Yarn of the Month and charity. This month we asked Miryam what she would like to be the charity. This month we are supporting Doctors Without Borders. So at the end of the month we will be making a donation to this great charity. You still get 10% off the Rock Creek Yarn for the month of July!

I suppose I should mention that there are a couple of spots left in Coleen’s Saturday Toe up Magic Loop Sock class that runs July 11th,18th and 25th from 10:30am - 12:30pm. This class is a very popular one throughout the year. Call the shop or stop in to join the class! (410) 788 7262.

Have a safe and happy holiday and I will see you at the shop!

February Lady Sweater

Friday, April 3rd, 2009

Last week I posted about using stitch markers when working lace but chose not to reveal the pattern.  Katie Ostrosky, who left a comment for us, was correct in her guess.  I’ve been working on the February Lady Sweater - a free pattern that is gaining lots of attention and popularity right now.  So much so that Kellie Nuss will be teaching a class on it this summer at Cloverhill.

February Lady Sweater

February Lady Sweater

My intention had been to finish the sweater (the rest of the body and the two sleeves) and then post pictures of my finished garment.  It was quite doable for me given the week I had coming.  By Saturday night I had finished the body and most of one sleeve.  With this pattern I love the ability to make both the body and the sleeves any length you want and I want three-quarter length sleeves.  Knowing I was close to the length I wanted for the sleeve, I tried it on (in front of a mirror) and wasn’t thrilled with what I saw.  Due to the nature of the pattern, faulting the yoke and picked up stitches under the sleeve, there was an unsightly bulge of fabric in the front of the armpit area.  I browsed through hundreds of pictures of this sweater on Ravelry and saw that any person wearing the sweater in their photo had the same fabric bulge that I did.  This wouldn’t do - I want to wear this sweater and knew that I wouldn’t if I kept the excess fabric.

Not wanting to rip out the sleeve, I picked up the other one and with a new ball of yarn I joined it together (in the round) and omitted the picking up of stitches on the body to join it to the sleeve.  This picking up creates an elegant seam but added a whole extra pattern repeat (7sts).  By omitting the repeat I’ve lost 1.5″ of fabric which eliminates a portion of the extra fabric problem.  It also makes the overall sleeve smaller in width which is better for my body.  This did create a hole in the armpit and my plan is to graft it vertically as if I was joining separate pieces together.  (Thanks for the tip Bonita!)  Hopefully now armed with this new tactic I can finish the sweater before it gets too warm to wear it.

I spoke with Kellie last night regarding this problem and what her view on it was.  She agreed that it was a fault in the pattern and since it was a free pattern, it’s up to the knitter to be willing to customize it for their body.  My adaptation was one solution and Kellie is reworking the pattern a bit to offer an alternative in her class.  We both felt it was important to publicly acknowledge this issue and encourage you to think logically about patterns and be willing to make changes if necessary.  Do what seems right to you - there’s a good chance if it doesn’t seem, it could be the pattern and not you!

Felted Flowers!

Sunday, March 29th, 2009

Howdy!  I just wanted to share with you this month’s wonderful “Felted Flowers” class.  It was so much fun– a wonderful group of folks gathered to get out some stress and stretch their creativity by combining  love of horticulture and fiber!

class4

This class combined both knitted & wet felted construction and also needle felting.

Needle felting is in a word, awesome.  We regularly offer an introductory class which acquaints you with tools and materials and gets you on the road to various genres of creating with needles and fiber.  We stock a full range of tools– needles of different sizes and shapes, multi-needle tools, foam, beginners kits, and BEAUTIFUL rovings  ( solid and hand painted) in many colors.  Look for upcoming classes to include “painting with fiber” and also “sculptural needle felting”  where we will work with form and figure.  leave a comment or call the shop if you would like more information.

See you soon!
